TCMS Event set for October, FReepers stoked:
This year's shoot will be October 18th. Once again it will be held in Seagoville, (5 miles south of Route 175 or 3.5 miles NE of I-45 (exit 270) on S. Belt Line Road). The plan at this time is to meet at Cotton Gin in Crandle for breakfast at 9:00 a.m., BUT they are currently closed due to a fire. Hopefully they will be reopened by October. If not, Plan B will be put in place. After breakfast we will all head to the range. A delicious lunch will be provided at the range by our wonderful FRiend cpdiii.

I have heard that many people are questioning the validity of the pictures of targets that DHS has ordered from Law Enforcement Targets, Inc.
Here is a screen shot of their website, taken a few moments ago, showing the targets are still up, although the link to them is gone from their main page.
I left the clocks that are on my desktop to show the time I got the screenshot, at 0413 Arizona time this date.

jquery is cryptic only at first, and has very powerful canned routines available. Date-picker comes to mind... pops up a little month calendar when you click on a date entry field. It's just js, but in shorthand. jquery is awesome!
I only use ajax when nothing else will do... it can be a major server hog depending on data intensity, sessions, etc. learned by experience. Of course in production. On the upside, I got to learn how to use a profiler.

Will check it out again. I think I used it in one routine, but don't even remember where now. It'll no doubt clean up a lot of the messes I made trying to figure this stuff out.

"While the cellphone network in Haiti survived the devastating earthquake in 2010, the added load of international aid workers who arrived in the aftermath caused it to crash. Josh Thomas and Jeff Robble, both working at Mitre, saw this problem and created a working prototype backup network using only the Wi-Fi chips on Android smartphones. This capability won’t be shipped on new mobile phones anytime soon, but it is a really interesting open innovation project to understand and follow, and for some an Android project to which they might contribute."

Yah, utf-8 is what java uses in our apps, and is happy. If you use Eclipse, I believe it's in the java settings. The jdbc driver was defaulted to 7 bit ascii, so it lopped off the high bit... until they fixed it so it conviently threw a stack trace.
I set the jdbc param (or connection manager setting if your driver doesn't take params) to what the *database* uses, then java handled the chars fine. Since I didn't mess with the connection manager, I can't advise on that. The beauty of it was that we didn't have to parse anything, which could be a not insignificant performance factor... in fact we changed no application code.
I'm just trying to clarify what I did. YMMV :o)

My friends, there is hope. Law enforcement officers at the local level are making their stand and they want you to be a part of that. While I’ve written on various sheriffs that have made their own stance to protect their citizens from anyone attempting to confiscate guns, I recently ran across Police Chief Mark Kessler of the Gilberton Borough Police Department in Pennsylvania. He wants citizens to join with his police department in building a “reserve force” that will aid his police force should the need arise to resist Federal authorities when it comes to the Second Amendment.

Photo: Iskander, a new Russian short-range missile
Posted: February 15, 2011
Judging by press reports, tactical nuclear weapons appear to have a curious propensity to surface with some regularity in Kaliningrad oblast, a Russian exclave squeezed between Lithuania and Poland. The Associated Press and other U.S. media organizations have recently reported Eastern European concerns about "an arsenal of tactical nuclear weapons believed to be at their doorstop in Russia's Kaliningrad exclave."[1] Ten years ago, almost to a day, The Washington Times reported that Russia had possibly moved warheads for short-range Tochka-U (SS-23) short-range ground-launched missiles into Kaliningrad. The story caused a brief stir in the United States and NATO and then quietly died since no proof emerged.[2] This time statements about tactical nuclear weapons in the exclave as well as in the main Russian territory close to the Baltic states came from Lithuania; the same issue was raised by several countries during the tour of U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Rose Gottemoeller to the region.[3]
The SS-23s in Kaliningrad that were a concern in 2001 are still there, but recent reports add a new wrinkle: the additional presence of new Iskander ground-launched missiles with the range close to 500 km. Unlike the SS-23s, there is no evidence that these new missiles have been tested for nuclear warheads, although theoretically they could be used for that mission. Nonetheless, as before these concerns do not cite any publicly available evidence making it unclear whether they are accurate or merely reflect fears of Russia by the Baltic States and Poland that make these countries suspect the worst.
At a different time few would have paid close attention to these statements, but things are different today. Several Western European countries are seriously discussing the possibility of completely withdrawing the small arsenal of U.S. tactical nuclear weapons that still remains in Europe (estimated at 180 B-61 bombs), among them are Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands, three of the five countries in which the weapons are based (the other two basing countries are Italy and Turkey). Before New START could enter into force, the Obama administration had to pledge to Congress in writing that within a year it would seek to begin talks with Moscow to address Russia's substantial preponderance in tactical nuclear weapons;[4] Russia is estimated to have about 2000 of the weapons. At the same time, as several recent statements by high-level Russian officials indicate,[5] Moscow has decided to temporize and will not provide a positive response to the anticipated U.S. proposal to discuss TNW. Statements about Russian tactical nuclear weapons that originate from NATO members in Eastern/Central Europe are just another piece in a complicated diplomatic and political game that will be played this year.
A closer look suggests, moreover, that suspicions about Russian tactical nuclear weapons in the vicinity of the Baltic states are probably overstated. There is no doubt that Russia is enhancing its missile capability there. The plan to deploy new Iskanders in Kaliningrad oblast was officially "sold" as a response to the George W. Bush administration's plan to deploy ten missile defense interceptors in Poland. Thus after the Obama administration announced a revision of that intention — a move clearly not anticipated by the Russians — the original plan for Iskanders had to be canceled and it was decided to deploy them in the main Russian territory in the vicinity of the Baltic states. Since the reach of these assets from the new location is smaller, the cancellation was clearly a defeat for the Russian military's plans.
There is no indication, however, that these missiles were intended to carry nuclear warheads. Instead, they fit perfectly with decade-old Russian efforts to develop a long-range conventional strike capability. Russian military leaders and experts regard a similar capability of the United States and NATO as the most serious threat to their security (and a source of envy), and there is every intention in Moscow to field an adequate response. Iskander missiles as well as a variety of other assets, such as a long-range conventional air-launched cruise missile and conventional sea-launched cruise missiles are just the more visible elements of these efforts. Giving a nuclear mission to Iskanders would simply defy the main purpose of having these missiles.
Similarly, there is no indication that SS-23s are now equipped with nuclear warheads. In fact, the 2001 rumors were reportedly based on the fact that some warheads for these missiles had been transported to Kaliningrad oblast, but even at that time it remained unclear whether these were nuclear or conventional. More recently, in 2007 the Chief of the 12th GUMO, General Vladimir Verkhovtsev, declared that nuclear warheads assigned to Ground Forces had been dismantled.[6] This means that there should be no more nuclear warheads for the ground-launched SS-23s.
Sea-launched nuclear weapons are kept at naval bases and the probability that any are intended for the Baltic Fleet (much less for the ships based in Kaliningrad oblast) appears very low — there are simply few targets for these assets. According to statements from the leaders of the Russian Navy, these weapons are intended to balance U.S. Navy, and there are few, if any, targets for them in the Baltic Sea.
In a more general sense, tactical nuclear weapons (aside from sea launched ones as noted above) do not have a viable mission contrary to the common perception that Russian short-range nuclear assets are intended to balance NATO's conventional superiority. The Russian military believes that the key danger from U.S. and NATO military forces involves conventional strikes at long distances; short-range nuclear weapons simply are incapable of balancing that particular threat. Consequently, the role of nuclear balance is assigned to longer-range nuclear assets — strategic and intermediate range (air-and sea-launched).[7] Given the operational Russian nuclear strategy, deployment of short-range nuclear weapons in Kaliningrad oblast, much less further to the east, simply does not make much sense.
The issue of tactical nuclear weapons is difficult and highly controversial. Their psychological significance and visibility far outweighs their political and military value, and this seems true for both East and West. No one really knows how to deal with them: negotiations are highly desirable, but since they have never been a subject of negotiations, there is no precedent. Raising the profile of these weapons, no matter how well-intentioned, can only make the task of limiting and reducing them more difficult. Even today, NATO talk about Russian TNW only serves to enhance their perceived value in the eyes of Russian policy makers and military and consequently raises the "price" for the agreement to include them into the arms control agenda. A more realistic — and cool-headed — assessment can conceivably be more conducive for early success at limiting and reducing the Russian TNW arsenal.

Russia's Tactical Nuclear Weapons
Part I: Background and Policy Issues
I-0.0 Introduction to Part I
Since the 1970s, the United States and the Soviet Union, and now the United States and Russia, have negotiated and implemented several nuclear arms control agreements. These agreements have limited, reduced, and even eliminated categories of nuclear weapons spanning categories of intermediate range to strategic forces. By most accounts, these treaties have achieved successes in improving strategic stability and enhancing national and international security.
The one category of nuclear forces that remains uncovered by formal arms control measures is tactical weapons. When experts use the term
"tactical" to describe a category of nuclear forces, most readers intuitively understand the reference.
However, while the Intermediate Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty and
the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) explicitly define the types of weapon systems covered by those agreements, a working definition of tactical nuclear weapons (TNWs) has proven elusive.
A working definition is explored in more detail below. The simplest definition is to use "tactical" to describe all sub-strategic forces not covered by the INF Treaty.

"Savages can kill each other, but they can't communicate with each other. You can't prove anything to a savage, because a savage does not believe in objective standards of proof. The savage is a subjective creature. All he knows is what he feels and he is unaware and unwilling to discuss the process through which the ideas that shape his feelings have been communicated. This is his ultimate taboo. For the savage, communication is a means of asserting his own strength and power. That is a phenomenon you can study in the Amazon or in YouTube comments. It is not a means of achieving an understanding because for the savage there is nothing to understand. Understanding requires thought and the savage feels, rather than thinks. Only those ideas which come to him as emotions and embody his sense of self are integrated into his worldview."

In short, I've ripped the guts out of the original design and rebuilt the entire shooting match... again. Hopefully better and more hopefully, I'll be happier with this design (though the code is chock full of old experimental stuff that didn't work right or stuff that's no longer needed and will have to be unspaghettified as I get time). Also introduced some bugs that will have to be ferreted out. Hopefully will get most of them straightened out in the next few days.

I'm using javascript and the new "Ajax" programming techniques for the first time. It's tricky programming and hard to debug but it's pretty cool once you finally get it working. Can update and edit pages with new posts, comments, images, etc., without having to reload the entire page. Just click "Post" or "Update" and it's in.
And edit in place is pretty nice too. Can hardly wait to start using this thing for real.

Later, I'll figure out how to pull in other people's new posts onto your open page in near real-time without having to reload the page. This will be a cool feature on chat like threads (Live Threads) or for MyPing/MyMail notifications. In fact, we can have a toggle to open any thread or mail message session into a chat like dialog window. Other Ajax tricks I'm still working on and trying to figure out.

Planning on adding a "reply to" feature similar to FR where you can reply directly to someone's comment, also a built in ping list feature. And of course, latest posts per user and site-wide, etc.

Our nation is at a critical turning point. As we look to the future, we are propelled by America's past. It's imperative that we connect with our founders, our patriots, our challenges and victories to clearly see our way forward. A good way to do this is to appreciate the significance of our nation's historic sites, patriotic events and diverse cultures, which we'll do in the coming weeks on our "One Nation" tour. We'll celebrate the good things that bring Americans together; those things that will give us the needed strength to meet the heady challenges ahead. Ive said many times that America doesnt need a "fundamental transformation," instead we need a restoration of all that is good and strong and free in America! So, together lets prepare ourselves for the days ahead by reminding ourselves who we are and what Americans stand for. We'll celebrate the meaning of our nation's blueprints, our Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, which are the threads that weave our past into the fabric necessary for the survival of American exceptionalism. Our founders declared "we were born the heirs of freedom," and despite our difficulties and disagreements, we remain one nation under God in freedom, indivisible. Through visits to historical sites and patriotic events, we'll share the importance of America's foundation. We encourage you to support the pro-America events we'll be privileged to participate in during these coming weeks. Discover the ties that bind Americans, our history, our traditions, and the exceptional nature of our country!

To anyone who still believes the National Rifle Association cares more about protecting your Second Amendment rights than it does about kissing up to powerful politicians, it's time to wake up and smell the coffee.
For the NRA, the Second Amendment has become little more than an expedient tool for raising money, striking political compromises, and maintaining access to those in power.
This week, the NRAs Political Victory Fund endorsed liberal Democrat Congresswoman Betsy Markey, who cares so deeply about the Second Amendment that she didnt even bother to return the NRAs survey when she first ran for Congress two years ago.
So why did the NRA cast its lot with Markey now?
Its simple: the NRA likes to play it safe by backing incumbents, even those whose support of gun rights is as sturdy as a soggy role of toilet paper. When the NRA endorsed liberal Democrat Sen. Harry Reid, NRA lobbyist Chris Cox explained that its long-standing policy gives preference to incumbent candidates who have voted with the NRA on key issues.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman on Tuesday told the San Jose Mercury News editorial board that "Fresno looks like Detroit. It's awful."
According to the Mercury News website, Whitman was commenting on Fresno's economic state and the effect of recession on the region, and the former eBay CEO's campaign said as much in a statement released this morning.
"It was clear in the interview that Meg was talking about the economic duress in Fresno and the awful pain that results from record high unemployment," Whitman spokesman Andrea Jones Rivera said in an e-mail. "Meg knows that Fresno cannot be left behind as it has been in the past when the economic situation around the state gets better but Fresno doesn't respond as quickly."

Greetings my fellow riders, South Floridians, and all Americans, it is time for our monthly political assessment. First, I just want to thank you all for your support during the August primary election....as well thanks for coming up and telling me how you appreciate this column.
The two quotes from above did not come from any brilliant military strategist. They come from the book written by Saul Alinsky entitled, "Rules for Radicals; A Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals". This book was written in 1971 by Mr Alinsky, a Chicago native, and has been referred to by many members of the Democrat party, some rather senior. The book's tone is set right from the beginning with its author's acknowledgement to "the first radical known to man", Lucifer.
I truly believe the major story which dominates this election season is that of character assassination. We are seeing less of an ideological debate on the prescient issues affecting our Republic between contenders. This has seemingly been replaced by the ever intensifying 11th and 13th rules from Alinsky's book. The fact that many incumbents are using their vast campaign coffers, not to present their case, but rather demonize their opponents is becoming more apparent.

Way to go, Mike Pence!
Washington Post · September 18, 2010 · By Felicia Sonmez
Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) took the top spot Saturday in a presidential straw poll of social conservatives meeting in Washington, a surprise victory over last year's overwhelming favorite, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee.
Pence placed first with 24 percent in the straw poll of 723 social conservatives at the Family Research Council's fifth annual Values Voter Summit. Huckabee took second place with 22 percent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney came in third with 13 percent and former House speaker Newt Gingrich took fourth with 10 percent.
Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin took fifth with 7 percent. Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, another potential 2012 GOP hopeful, took 1 percent of the straw poll vote.
Pence beat out 16 other leading Republicans on the straw poll ballot. Former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty and Rep. Michele Bachmann (Minn.) were originally to appear on the ballot but asked to have their names removed. Pawlenty, who is on a trade mission in Asia, told reporters on a conference call Friday that he "didn't think it would be appropriate to participate" in the straw poll if he couldn't attend the summit.

Coons is going down...
NRSC · Sept 17, 2010 · Staff
While the Associated Press reports that Democrat U.S. Senate hopeful Chris Coons (D-DE) claims he successfully restored his county to financial health and is ready to do the same for the federal government, an examination of Coons record as New Castle County Executive shows otherwise.
In fact, by Coons own standard, he led the county from being fundamentally sound to the verge of bankruptcy in just four years, lamenting that the county was 18 months from being out of money and unable to operate.
As New Castle Countys spending skyrocketed by 10 percent under Coons leadership, he shifted the burden for his irresponsibility to taxpayers with three massive property tax hikes of 5 percent, 17.5 percent and 25 percent respectively. In 2008, Fitch Ratings downgraded the countys rating outlook from stable to negative because the countys cash balances were decreasing under Coons reckless stewardship.

September 17, 2010 (Statement from Terri's Life & Hope Network) - It has been 49 days since Trisha Duguay has gone without any food or water after her feeding tube was removed. Her husband made this decision shortly after Trisha had unsuccessful surgery for a brain tumor that was discovered just after the couple was married.
The family has started a Facebook page to lend support to Trisha and her family titled, "From Bride to Angel." So far, over 4,000 people have supported the family.
While what is happening to Mrs. Duguay is not receiving a lot of media attention, Terri's Life & Hope Network expresses concern with the manner in which some media outlets are portraying the situation, treating Trisha's prolonged death and going without food and hydration-for over 7 weeks now-as an act of compassion.

Murk should bow out... Go, Miller, GO!!
The Hill · 9/17/2010 · by Elise Viebeck
Though he didn't name her specifically, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) blasted Senate colleague Lisa Murkowski (R-Ala.) Friday morning during a speech to the Values Voters Summit.
"Even in Alaska, the home of bacon, they threw out that senator," DeMint told an applauding crowd as he discussed the Tea Party movement.
He also took the opportunity to praise Murkowski's challenger, local Alaska attorney Joe Miller, to whom she conceded the Republican Senate primary on Sept. 1, and to express his fondness for the Tea Party movement.
"Tea parties? I've been to a lot of them," he said to more applause.
He went on to criticize "senior Republicans in the Senate" for not supporting insurgents.
"Some of our establishment friends are not really happy with me, or you," he said.
With comments like these, DeMint has increasingly found himself at the center of tensions between establishment Republicans and rising Tea Party challengers.
